About Beth Applewhite
How it Started
During my second pregnancy, I was on bed rest for over six months. When my daughter was born, I was anxious to get out of the house. My son was almost two, and I felt that I had a lot of lost time to make up for due to my time on bed rest. My son was also at an age where I felt that he was learning new words every day, understanding more, and ready to experience new things. I would overhear my friends talking about a neat event that they attended, and I would often ask, “How did you know about that?” I was an educator in Houston, and I thought that I was very connected to kid-friendly activities. Little did I know, I was wrong. I started a secret facebook group called Kid Fun Houston. I added my group of friends that had children of their own. My hope was that my friends would share their ideas, tell me about cool events coming up, and invite me to come along. In an attempt to get the group going, I started to do my own research. My research taught me that I was quite clueless about the overwhelming number of things there are to do to with kids in Houston. I also realized that there wasn’t one “go to” place to find everything. I shared the places, events, and ideas as I learned about them. The group slowly started to grow as my friends added their friends, they added their friends, and so on. Before I knew it, I had about 700 members in the group. In the beginning, I would invite my friends over or offer to meet somewhere. Once the group started to grow, the focus changed. My teacher mentality kicked in, and I realized that there are probably many other parents out there who just aren’t aware of everything in our large city. I made the decision to open the group up to everyone. During the past year, the Kid Fun Houston group has grown tremendously. In August 2014, the group had 1,000 members. In January 2015, the group reached 5,000 members. In April 2015, the group reached 10,000 members. In June 2015, the group reached 15,000 members. By August 2015, my goal is to reach 17,000 members. The group has really evolved over the past year. I initially started the group to share ideas. As time progressed, I became passionate about organizing events for the group. Before Kid Fun Houston really took off, I enjoyed planning tours for my son at fire stations, police stations, the post office, our vet, the bank, etc. At some point, I realized that others could benefit from all of the planning. I decided to start planning events for the group. Kid Fun Houston offers a variety of events that are fun, learning opportunities for kids. Many of the events are free or discounted. I really enjoy seeing the smiles on families’ faces as they attend the events that I organize. For those who aren’t able to attend my events, I know that they are getting the ideas so that they can plan outings on their own. As an educator, I know that it takes a community to raise a child. My goal with Kid Fun Houston is to make it easy for parents to find fun, enriching activities for their children.
The mission of Kid Fun is to be a valuable resource to other families. Kid Fun is a great way to get ideas on places to go, ways to get discounts, educational ideas, and much more. Kid Fun is Houston’s best resource for providing events around town.
