MFAH Summer Fun

The MFAH is one of the largest museums in the United States.  Their permanent collection is huge, and there are 1.25 million people that benefit from the museum each year.  

Summer Fun

The MFAH is full of summer activities for all ages including adults and children.  They offer a variety of programs, guided tours, making art, movies, and lots more.   MFAH Summer  

Summer Programs:

1. Sunday Family Zone - Visit on Sundays from 1-4pm Families are invited to enjoy games, activities, books, and tours of the galleries.  There are two storybook circles offered at 1:30pm and 3pm. The event is located in the Beck Building, and it's free with general admission.   2.  Sunday Family Studio - Visit on selected Sundays at 1pm and 2:30pm The Sunday workshops allow families an opportunity to create pieces of art.  You'll enjoy creating masterpieces in the art studio using their materials and tools.  The event takes place in the Beck Building.  The cost is $6 per child for members and $8 per child for nonmembers. Adults can attend for free with general admission.   3. MFAH Playdate - Offered on Tuesdays in June, July, and August 2 at 10:45 a.m. The playdate is offered to children up to 35 months old.  They will enjoy hands on experiences in the galleries.  The playdates are focused on different works of art.  During the play date, you'll sing songs, listen to storybooks, play games, and enjoy activities. The children will learn about color, size, and texture in art.  The event is free with general admission.   4. Family Storybook Circle - Offered on Tuesdays in June, July, and August 2 at 11:30 a.m. You will enjoy a storybook adventure connected to works of art.  During the event, the group will travel through the galleries with tour guides that will teach you about art.  The event is free for children, and it's free for adults with museum admission.   5. Summer Art Explorers - Offered on Thursdays in June and July from 11am to 2pm This FREE event is a way for children to navigate through the museum and explore works of art.  You'll learn about fashion, portraits, landscapes, and sculptures.  The experience will tie in games, toys, and storybooks to engage the children.  You'll have the opportunity to try artistic techniques in the studio.  The museum is free on Thursdays, and this program is free as well.   6.  Little Artists - Offered on the 1st Friday of each month at 10:30 a.m. This event is geared toward children ages 3 to 5 years old. The kids are invited to learn about art, learn about the materials, learn about the process of creating, and more.  The program has a storybook circle, multi-sensory play, a tour of the galleries, and an art project.  The cost of the program is $6 per child for members and $8 per child for nonmembers.  Adults are free with general admission.   7.  Saturday Sketch - Offered selected Saturdays from 11am-2pm This event is a way to explore different techniques and tools that artists use to create sketches. An artist will teach with paper, pencils, and clipboards.  There are 15 mini lessons given at 11am, 12pm, and 1pm.  The cost is free with general admission.   8.  Detective Days at Bayou Bend - Offered Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10am to 4pm and Sundays from 1-4pm Children ages 6 to 12 years old can solve riddles with clues while learning about horticulture, art, design, and American history.  The young detectives will solve the mystery and receive a certificate for completion. The Hunts in the Gardens and in the House take place at the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens.  The admission is free for children ages 18 and younger, and it's $10 for adults.   9.  Storytime at Rienzi - Offered on Wednesdays in June and July at 10am You can teach your child about art and literature in this adorable house-museum setting.  The storytime tours highlight the Rienzi collection.  Rienzi is located at 1406 Kirby.  The program is free with Rienzi admission, and it's recommended for children ages 3 and older.  

Other exhibits and fun:

  1. The Cullen Sculpture Garden The sculpture garden is filled with art and nature.  It's always free, and it's open daily from 9am to 10pm.   2. Bayou Bend Family Days - Free Sunday Fun The Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens offers a free afternoon of fun on the 3rd Sunday of each month.  The event takes place from September to May.  The event offers tours, performances, crafts, demonstrations, and more.    


The museum is open on Tuesday & Wednesday from 10am to 5pm, on Thursday from 10am to 9pm, on Friday & Saturday from 10am to 7pm, and on Sunday from 12:15pm to 7pm.  It is closed on Mondays except holidays.  


General admission allows you to view the MFAH art collections.  The cost is $15 for adults, $7.50 for youth ages 13-18 years old, and free for children 12 and under. The museum is free on Thursdays, and it's open late.  Children 12 and under are always free at the museum.
